Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA)

What is Fine Needle Aspiration?
Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) is a type of biopsy done when a breast lump can be felt.

What to Expect
There is no special preparation for FNA. The procedure is usually done in the physician's office. The physician/ nurse practitioner inserts a thin needle into the lump to remove fluid or cells, which are later examined. Most women have mild discomfort during the procedure..

After the Biopsy
You may resume your normal daily activity. You may have slight bruising, discomfort and swelling at the biopsy site. Use over-the-counter pain relievers as needed

Biopsy Results
Your doctor/ nurse practitioner should have the biopsy results within 3 to 5 working days. Call your doctor if you have not received the results within 1 week.
